Idris Elba may be new to the Fast & Furious franchise but he’s already kicking ass and taking names.
In the spinoff flick, Fast & Furious Presents Hobbs & Shaw, DSS agent Luke Hobbs ( Dwayne Johnson) and his rival Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) team up to take down Elba’s Brixton Lore during his quest to unleash a deadly virus on the world.
Elba told HipHollywood at the dueling world premieres that he loved playing the genetically enhanced super-soldier and slapping his co-stars around.
“I slapped these guys, both of them, big one, little one, bang, bang it didn’t matter they both were getting taken down,” he said jokingly.
Meanwhile Statham admitted he’d always wanted to work with fellow Brit, Elba.
“I’ve known Idris for many years,” he said. “I’ve always wanted to work with him. We’ve always toyed around with ‘is this good enough for us to waste on each other?’ but this one was a great one you know.”
In Hobbs & Shaw fans get a closer look at the two characters who first met on-screen in Furious 7.
“With the chemistry that had developed between Jason and myself it was our responsibility to try and create and deliver something that was big, bombastic, fun, cool fresh, all these things that [fans] would expect from a Fast and Furious movie,” explained Johnson.
But what fans may not expect are the celebrity cameos (which we can’t reveal just yet) and the nod to Johnson’s Samoan roots.
“This movie is deeply personal to me, not only because it’s a character that I love playing and creating over the years in Hobbs,” said Johnson. “But it is the very first time that I get to showcase one of my cultures — I’m half black, and half Samoan –on a massive scale.”
